On average, one in every five respondents believed that the government should in fact continue to spy on them, but should avoid spying on us (23 percent of respondents in Canada, 22 percent of respondents in New Zealand, 17 percent of respondents in Australia, and 16 percent of respondents in Britain). Nearly one in every three respondents in the U.S. 2Įven more intriguing was the number of people who vehemently condemned domestic governmental surveillance while simultaneously fully condoning foreign surveillance. In the US, 20% believed their government should monitor citizens compared with 50% for foreign nationals. For instance, in Canada only 23% believed their government should monitor citizens compared with 48% for foreign nationals. In some countries the rate of agreement for monitoring foreign nationals was more than double that of citizens. ![]() In all surveyed countries, more people were in favour of their government monitoring foreign nationals (45%) than citizens (26%). As summarized by Professor Chris Chambers: One of the study’s most revealing conclusions concerned the extent to which the majority of those interviewed reported tolerance towards surveillance directed at foreign nationals, as opposed to surveillance directed against citizens of their state. The report analyzed the attitudes of roughly fifteen thousand people from across thirteen countries towards the lingering leaks surrounding the pervasiveness of modern-day governmental mass surveillance programs. On March 18, 2015, Amnesty International reported the outcome of a remarkable survey conducted with the help of a British company, YouGov, studying worldwide public reactions to the cascade of revelations by former National Security Agency (NSA) contractor-turned-whistle-blower, Edward Snowden. When called out about any of these programs, policy makers often respond to their constituencies with a shrug and a smile: we only apply these programs to foreigners, you have nothing to worry about. Intelligence agencies have been recently involved in the exercise of global indiscriminate surveillance, which purports to go beyond their limited territorial jurisdiction and sweep in “the telephone, internet, and location records of whole populations.” Today’s political leaders and corporate elites are increasingly engaged in these kinds of programs of bulk interception, collection, mining, analysis, dissemination, and exploitation of foreign communications data that are easily susceptible to gross abuse and impropriety. While the rise of information technologies tells a miraculous story of triumph over the physical constraints that once shackled mankind, these very technologies are also the cause of grave concern. The digital age brought with it a new epoch in global political life, one neatly coined by Professor Philip Howard as the “pax technica.” In this new world order, g overnment and industry are “tightly bound” in technological and security arrangements that serve to push forward an information and cyber revolution of unparalleled magnitude. This is when the word some can be used as an article. So, what about non-specific nouns that are plural? The Article SomeĪs we learned in the previous section, a and an can only refer to singular, countable nouns that are not specific. In the examples above, the article an is the correct choice because the nouns start with a vowel or a vowel sound when pronounced. Indefinite means general, or not specific. The articles a and an are indefinite articles. Thus, the can be used when both the writer and reader know about a specific noun. (joy= uncountable noun)Īs you can see, the article the can be used with all types of nouns, but should only be used when referring to a specific noun. (birthday card= singular, countable noun) The article the can be used to refer to specific singular, plural, countable, and uncountable nouns. Countable nouns are those that can be counted, like pens, chairs, and computers. Next, let’s discuss countable and uncountable nouns. In our house, the holidays, or any special occasion, really, means pie. There are so many hollow sentiments batted at us this time of year, but beyond the hype, there’s something special about time dedicated to family, dear friends, and great food. We’ll exchange small presents for Christmas, but beyond that, I’m shifting my focus to the real gift of the season – spending time with those I love. Right then, I decided I liked things better in my tiny bubble and have decided to stay here for the duration of the holiday. A Quiet ChristmasĪfter such quiet, cozy times, it was kind of shocking to wake up late on Friday to a Twitter feed overflowing with calls to action to buy this and that. Right after that, our weekend spiraled out of control a little bit with sickness and the like, but nobody had to go to the hospital so we count that as a victory. We had to pause a lot and explain things that don’t come up much in a seven year-old’s life, like the difference between a building and loan and a bank, World War II, bank runs, the Charleston, and the nature of greed, but still, it was a lovely time. After dinner, we had pie, put our littlest to bed, while our older daughter got to stay up late to watch It’s a Wonderful Life with us. In typical fashion, we sat down an hour later than we’d wanted to, but it didn’t matter in the least. Our Thanksgiving featured only the four of us, Brian, me, and our two girls.
